Description
Is Europe a society or does it consist of different societies? Europe is a social entity that has challenged the social sciences in many ways. While the classical sociological vocabulary increasingly turns out to be of limited use, the field of European studies is still little integrated. In this course, we will review a number of approaches from a variety of disciplines that deal with the Europeanization of society. Our main question will be whether there is a such a thing as a European culture, a European public sphere and a European people.

GENERAL REMARKS: A few guiding questions will be posted by every Friday for your reading convenience. Each participant is encouraged to give a short presentation (ten minutes) during one of the classes. On May 15th and June 19th you are expected to turn in short essays (Magister students: three to five pages, European Studies: two to three pages, in English or in German) where the reading assignments of the preceding sessions are to be critically discussed and where own ideas should be developed. Two credit points will be obtained for participation, an oral presentation and two essays; another three credit points can be obtained for a longer essay (Magister students: 15 to 20 pages, European studies: around ten pages, deadline: August 15th, 2006). A "Leistungsschein" will require participation, a presentation, two short essays and a longer essay. Class attendance is obligatory at all times; up to two absences are possible (on justification only).
